What to expect...

Welcome to my Technology Internship Journal! Over the next 4 months, I will be providing monthly meetings to the staff of Fulton Elementary School on the use of different educational technologies. Through the use of Blogger, I will post and reflect on the technologies, staff and the implementation of the technologies in the school.

October 2 - 1st Meeting

Our first meeting was a definite success. We began our meeting with a sign-in using the wiimotes. This was a good ice breaker because every classroom has a wiimote setup and the staff is not using the technology. The requirements for the program was given to the staff. The staff has the option to choose the technology learning community or the book club or the observation. My expectations for the staff are to attend all required meetings, learn the focused technology, develop and implement a technology induced lesson plan, and produce a two-page reflection.

The rest of the one-hour meeting was focused on the wiimote program. I went through the program's tools the teachers can use. There were a lot of questions about the wiimotes setup. Next meeting will be based solely on setting up the computer/white screen/cables, etc.

October 31 - 2nd Meeting

The second meeting was designed to motivate the teachers to use the technology in their classroom. One of the fears the teachers had was connecting the technology together. They are excited to have the technology and with my help I was able to reduce their fears by demonstration how to set up the equipment. This took quite some time due to the number of teachers and the lack of instructors. Tom and I decided to split the group in half and take our bunch to different rooms. The teachers seem to understand how to use the wiimotes, but still lack the procedure to get the projector, wiimote, and software up and running appropriately.

The next meeting will be the middle of November. The focus on this session will be on teacher break out sessions in their classroom. Hopefully, this time will be spent on teacher practicing their lesson and using the technology. My job will be to oversee the teacher work time and provide guidance and help where necessary.

December 11 - 3rd Meeting

Due to administration restrictions we were unable to have a meeting for the month of November. Teachers were focused on grades and report cards along with parent teacher conferences. The second week of December was deemed better for meeting.

The focus of this meeting was getting the teachers comfortable with setting up and using the technology on their own. I was overseeing the third grade teachers as well as some second grade teachers. Tom was managing the fourth grade and kindergarten teachers. My goal for this meeting was to step back and provide support for the teachers. One of my teachers is becoming very comfortable with the wiimote project. She has her lesson plan ready and she's beginning to practice the entire lesson. She is also acting as a role model for the other teachers as well.

One of the issues I have seen with my group is anxiety of technology troubleshooting. Most of the teachers feel the don't know what to do if a problem occurs midway through the lesson. I instructed them to go through their setup to find the issue, or have a back up plan just in case.

The next meeting will be next Friday, December 18.
